Many European cities turn into the winter wonderland during December. From all of them, mine far-far-far-far-favorite is Christmas market in Zagreb. It could be that it has become a little bit too much commercialized and crowdy during the last years, but I could assure you it has been rewarded with a tittle of the best European Christmas market with a good reason.
One day trip would be too hectic and eventful so we decided to spend the whole weekend in Zagreb. We were staying in hostel Chic.
220 trees illuminated with thousand white lights are surrounding music pavilion where music concerts and performances are held every day from 6 pm to 10 pm. Real Christmas atmosphere and the smell of mulled wine attracts all generations who can enjoy traditional Croatian food as krpice (pasta with cabbage), strudels (cooked or baked dough filled with cottage cheese) and Croatian frittes from 18 different food and drinks stands.
FOOLING AROUND AT STROSSMAYER
Between Zrinjevec and Ice Park is the main gastro event called Fooling around where visitors could find burgers and street sarma as well as traditional German dessert germknödels. This year even our furry friends are welcomed at the stand of Dog bakery Hov-Hov Zagreb.
ICE PART IN KING TOMISLAV SQUARE
Right next to Zrinjevec we found Ice Park in King Tomislav Square. Ice Park is one of the largest outdoor ice-skating complexes in Europe. It covers an area of more than 2000 square meters and it’s a must for all ice-skating lovers. And for those who don’t have ice-skating skills, courses are organized.
BAN JELAČIĆ SQUARE AND CHRISTMAS TALE
At the central square in Zagreb, numerous concerts and music performances are held, including traditional charity concert organized by Ana Rukavina Foundation. On the left side of the square visitors could find Christmas tale, the snowy pine forest, in which stands with delicious food and drinks are hiding and where you can enjoy the merry atmosphere of Christmas while pop, rock and jazz hits are playing in the background. If I could give you one suggestion is to try out fritters in Slatka Bajka.
ADVENT AT KLOVIĆEVI DVORI
No words needed here, just visit advent in Upper town to get the best photo memory with real fairytale atmosphere.
ADVENT AT STROSS AND CHRISTMAS CARROLS AT TUNNEL GRIČ
Strolling around Zagreb’s favorite promenade is a pleasant walk during the day when visitors can enjoy views over the city and is beautiful when the night falls and hundreds of Christmas lights draw a romantic scene. It’s a muss to visit tunnel Grič, just a few minutes away from the Stross where you can take a walk on a street from Charles Dickens era with Christmas music playing in the background.
If you’ll have any free time left, I highly recommend you to visit Museum of Broken Relationships.
